“Chemistry” is in everything that surrounds us. Whether corona vaccines, concrete, quantum computers, fertilizers or solar cells – without a comprehensive knowledge of how these substances and materials are produced and what happens in or with them when they are used, we would be lost.
Because chemistry is so multifaceted, you can choose between several degree programs at the Department of Chemistry.
The Department of Chemistry is responsible for three degree programs and offers another degree program in close cooperation with Faculty 10: Biology.
Did you really enjoy the research you did for your Bachelor’s thesis? Would you now like to deepen your basic knowledge? Then it’s a good idea to join a master’s degree program. We offer two degree programs entirely in English.
Can’t wait to finish your high school diploma and finally go to university? Do your academic achievements suggest that you still have room for additional adventures and challenges? Then you can listen to lectures and take examinations with us before your high school diploma, which will later be recognized in your program of study.
Everything else is best discussed with our contact person for the pre-university program (for school pupils).
Great – you’ve already made it this far. We have obviously gained your interest. In personal contact, we can answer your questions directly or provide you with the right material.
At the Department of Chemistry, the people in our student advisory office will answer your questions about choosing a degree program, the organization of your studies and the content of your studies. All of them have studied chemistry themselves and are actively involved in our degree programs. So they know their stuff!
The student council is our student representation. You are also welcome to get in touch here and find out personally what studying with us is like.
Who can I contact?
Talk to our academic advisory office.
There are various things to consider when transferring from another higher education institution to one of our degree programs. You should therefore talk to our student advisory office as early as possible.
General questions about studying at JGU, student accounts and enrollment can be found on the pages of the Student Advisory Center.
Would you like to apply for a degree program in Chemistry at Mainz University? Then you will find all the information you need on the pages of the online application portal.
You can find the courses at the University of Mainz in the study information network JOGU-StINe.

You can also find out more here before actually starting your degree program.
Here you will find contacts for the most important questions about your degree program.
The student advisory office responsible for you will answer any specific questions you may have about content, requirements and career fields.
The Chemistry study office is responsible for the administration of all degree programs in the fields of chemistry and biomedical chemistry, as well as for the bachelor’s degree program in Molecular Biotechnology and the master’s degree program in Soft Matter and Materials. It is therefore your first contact point for matters relating to course management, e.g. for organizational questions regarding timetabling or registration and deregistration of courses, and examination management, e.g. for questions regarding examination regulations, registration and deregistration of examinations, issuing transcripts of records.
The Biology study office is responsible for the administration of the Molecular Biotechnology master’s degree program. There you will receive answers to your questions on the topics already mentioned.
