Decisions and resolutions are implemented at various points in the Department of Chemistry. The central organization of the department can be seen in the organization chart. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \n<\/jgu-base-image><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The Department of Chemistry is headed by the Department board<\/strong>. The Board consists of eight members of the professors and junior professors as well as two members of each of the three other status groups. The management is substituted in an advisory capacity. The Board meets approximately 10 times a year and is elected for three years by the members of the department. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The members of the management board are the point of contact for all questions relating to the department’s operational business, advising and supporting the executive management and the Department board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Department supports research and teaching activities with various central facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \n\n \n\n

Our management office is the first contact point for all information that needs to reach the management. Numerous administrative processes are also coordinated here – contracts for graduate assistants, business travel authorization forms, maintaining event calendars, invoicing services… The list is long and we are delighted to have a dedicated team that takes on these challenges on a daily basis. <\/p>\n\n\n<\/jgu-base-accordionitem>\n\n\n \n\n

JGU defines “core facilities” as organizational units that offer scientific services. The department is involved in two core facilities: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Central Facility for Chemical Analytics<\/strong><\/a> (CAFCA) consists of a team of four scientists and four technical employees and offers a great variety of expertise and versatile technologies for chemical analysis to our researchers. Chemical compounds can be characterized here using NMR-spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, single crystal X-ray diffraction and various elemental analytical methods. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Electron Microscopy Center Mainz<\/a><\/strong> (EMZ-M) is an association of several institutions for the coordinated operation of electron microscopy in Mainz. The Department of Chemistry operates a total of three high-resolution electron microscopes. In combination with other microscopic procedures, this allows a complete structural characterization of synthetic and natural samples down to atomic resolution. <\/p>\n\n\n<\/jgu-base-accordionitem>\n\n\n \n\n

Training in our laboratory courses would not be possible without a dedicated team of technical staff. They support the academic staff in the overall organization of the internships and the supervision of the students. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The department also offers teaching exports for other degree programs. These courses are also largely supervised by central academic staff. <\/p>\n\n\n<\/jgu-base-accordionitem>\n\n\n \n\n

Repairs and maintenance are part of the day-to-day business of the department’s workshops. However, the team of around 15 employees is at its best when it comes to building customized solutions for research and teaching. <\/p>\n\n\n<\/jgu-base-accordionitem>\n\n\n \n\n

The main business of the central chemicals warehouse is the purchase, professional receipt and storage of chemicals. For standard chemicals and common consumables, forward-looking procurement and interim storage on site ensures a high level of supply security. The experienced team supports the researchers with more complex procurements. <\/p>\n\n\n<\/jgu-base-accordionitem>\n\n\n \n\n

A small team of three employees ensures that everything works as well as possible in the building complex on the Duesberg. This not only includes coordinating the deployment of technicians, instructing them on the projector technology in the lecture halls and monitoring the waste disposal station, but also coordinating the network on site and operating a number of chemistry-specific servers and software services <\/p>\n\n\n<\/jgu-base-accordionitem>\n\n<\/jgu-base-accordion>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/jgu-base-section>\n\n<\/jgu-base-tabsitem>\n\n<\/jgu-base-tabs><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

In addition to these bodies and organizational units, there is always a need for discussion and coordination, which must be discussed in other forums. There are three formats for this in the Department of Chemistry and two formats in Faculty 09. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \n\n \n\n

All members of Group 1 are invited to the professorial at longer intervals. Meetings in this group serve to exchange and discuss new developments in the Department of Chemistry. <\/p>\n\n\n<\/jgu-base-tabsitem>\n\n\n \n\n

Many people are involved in the education of our students. Plans and ideas on the content, structure and scope of courses are discussed in the subject-related teaching conferences. This involves the members of Group 1, other academic staff and also technical staff with a special connection to our laboratory courses. The teaching conferences are used to exchange ideas and develop concepts as well as for internal coordination. In order to improve networking between different subjects, teaching conferences are open to all interested parties. <\/p>\n\n\n<\/jgu-base-tabsitem>\n\n\n \n\n

The general assembly of the department takes place at longer intervals (approx. annually). Here, the Executive Management reports on current developments and is available for personal discussions with the members of the department. <\/p>\n\n\n<\/jgu-base-tabsitem>\n\n\n \n\n

The “A1” committee deals with the planning and monitoring of examination regulations for degree programs in chemistry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This committee is not strictly speaking an institution of the Department of Chemistry, but of Faculty 09. This committee advises the Faculty Council and the Dean’s Office in matters of teaching, but is closely interlinked with the Department of Chemistry due to the thematic overlap. <\/p>\n\n\n<\/jgu-base-tabsitem>\n\n\n \n\n

There is an examination committee for each degree program, which discusses more complex issues relating to examination law on behalf of the faculty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
